Let`s tend to mental health of student athletes playing one sport, year-round, and feeling the pressure


According to a consensus statement developed by athletic trainers, doctors, psychologists and other professionals, and published in the Journal of Athletic Training, “Many student athletes report higher levels of negative emotional states than non-student athlete adolescents and have been identified as having higher incidence rates for sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, mood disturbances, short tempers, decreased interest in training and competition, and inability to concentrate.”

Our high school athletes, no matter how talented, are still kids.

If we’re screaming at them from the sidelines as if our very lives hinged on what happens on the field, if we’re more concerned about their college-playing prospects than their physical and mental well-being, we should ask ourselves: What is the point of school athletics? Are they meant to benefit our athletes, or us?
