Prize pitch, she said that college in itself is a high-pressured environment,
where students are always thinking of the next exam, or the next semester, or
the next opportunity — and it doesn’t really leave a lot of room for students
to stay engaged in the present. So,
she began GetMactive in September as a way to teach students to use fitness as
a way to connect deeper to themselves and to use fitness as an outlet to
promote positive mental health. On
her Instagram page, @getmactive, Simmons posts content ranging from some 15
coaches, athletic trainers and mental health advocates, giving advice to
everything from injury prevention, workouts, and health and wellness tips. “The
overall theme is to get people to live in the moment,” she said. She
said that goals are important to have, but it’s also important for people to
persist and stay positive to achieve those goals. Her pages also focus on the
journey one takes to achieve those goals, and to “enjoy the process of getting
