‘Kids Don’t Know How They Feel . . . We’re Still in the Awareness Phase’


.....Soon, Concordia’s athletic director noticed Tchatchouwo’s plummeting grades and asked what was going on. 
“I told him and broke down,” says Tchatchouwo, now 29. “He was just like, ‘Why did you never speak up?” I`m like, `Listen, I was brought up in Africa and the inner city. We don`t have outlets to talk about mental health. That`s just not how we`re raised, so I didn`t know where to even start.’.....
.....The app prompts users to input their mood through emojis. If someone is stressed, it will ask why, offering choices such as personal life, academics, physical condition. Simply asking the question can create awareness. As Tchatchouwo recalls from his own experience prior to the AD’s intervention, “If anybody would have asked me what was going on, I would have answered. It`s just nobody had asked me. I didn`t know how to start that conversation.”.....

Bethany`s Notes: Consider the app The Zone which helps athletes just recognize their mood....this is the first step in mental health awareness. Sometimes students are not aware of what is triggering them so just some simple questions with guides can be helpful.
